Apply for an Autism Class place

Scoil Béal Átha Grean first opened an Autism Class for primary age children in September 2015 and a second class opened in September, 2019. We opened a new, state of the art ASD Unit in January 2020 which we refer to as 'An Cuan' (or the refuge). This facility caters for 12 pupils across both classes and we accept enrolment of boys and girls in both of our special classes..

Updated information on enrolment process for our Autism Class (primary)

All parents who wish to enrol their child in any autism class are now required to email the NCSE parentsnotify@ncse.ie

More details are provided below.

NCSE Enrolment Information

Step 1

If you wish for your child to be considered for our autism class, please fill out our Admissions Application form in full (page 1 & 2) and return with a copy of your child's Diagnostic Report. It is important to ensure that there is a recommendation that specifies that "a place in a special class for Autism attached to a mainstream primary school" is included.

We will then send you a Form 7 (notification of enrolment to an ASD class) and a Form 2 (Special Transport Application Form) to complete. These forms will be emailed along with a copy of the Diagnostic Report to the SENO (Special Educational Needs Organiser) who will assess on behalf of the NCSE.

Step 2

The Special Educational Needs Organiser (SENO) will determine if you child is eligible for a special class placement by reviewing the documentation submitted and applying the three NCSE eligibility criteria.

The following must be  provided in support of such an application:

Professional report(s) outlining:

1. Diagnosis of Autism: DSM IV/V or ICD 10/11 (psychologist, psychiatrist, multi-disciplinary report)

AND

2. A demonstration of the understanding of complexity of the child’s overall level of need/s evidenced in the professional reports

AND

3. Given the severity or complexity of the child’s support needs, a clear professional recommendation as to what educational placement type would be most appropriate to best meet the child’s needs, along with the rationale for same.

If your child meets all three criteria, a Preliminary Determination of Eligibility to a Special Class Placement letter will issue to you from the NCSE.

Step 3

Please contact our office on 06382015 or info@ballyagrannationalschool.com and submit your Preliminary Determination of Eligibility to a Special Class Placement letter as soon as it has been issued, if you still wish for your child to be considered for enrolment in An Cuan in SN Béal Átha Grean.

Step 5

All letters of Preliminary Determination of Eligibility to a Special Class Placement will be considered. Parents will also be asked to submit professional reports for assessment before an offer is made. Candidates will be ranked according to greatest need. The number of places available in the autism class (primary) in a given year is dependent on the status of pupils currently enrolled in the class.

Step 6

All successful and unsuccessful applicants for places in the autism class (primary) will be informed. A waiting list of unsuccessful applicants will be kept.

Successful applicants will be invited to a meeting between you, your child and the Autism Class teacher which will take place after ace has been formally accepted where you will get a chance to discuss in more detail the needs of your child and further processes and management points can be clarified for you.

If you require further information, please contact the school office on 06382015 or by email at info@ballyagrannationalschool.com
